Houghton was founded in 1836 by a syndicate of British Army Officers and name after the most senior of the three – Lieutenant Colonel Richmond Houghton. Houghton has built an enviable reputation shaping the Western Australian winemaking landscape. The Houghton Stripe range epitomises the flavoursome, vibrant style of Houghton.
The 2018 vintage in Western Australia was near perfect. A return to average rainfall levels and a bright sunny Spring period in the preceding year resulted in a high quality, average yielding crop. Mild summer conditions prevailed throughout the harvest period enabling steady flavour accumulation and ripeness. These weather conditions resulted in the harvest of Verdelho full of flavour and in good condition for the Houghton Sweet Classic.
Houghton Sweet Classic - Late Picked Verdelho is produced in a soft fruity style with gentle aromatic flavours. The grapes were mechanically harvested in the cool of the night to maintain freshness and varietal expression. The grapes were gently pressed and the resultant juice was cool fermented in stainless steel to highlight flavour and varietal purity. The fermentation was halted once the desired sugar level was achieved to create this sweet wine style.
Straw gold in colour with tinges of green, the nose displays intensely aromatic tropical fruit characters of pineapple, lychee and passionfruit. Citrus and pear notes add to the bright fruit nose. The bouquet follows onto the palate with a fresh, sweet and full-flavoured mouth feel. Balanced acidity supports a fruity clean finish to the wine.
