Houghton was founded in 1836 by a syndicate of British Army Officers and name after the most senior of the three – Lieutenant Colonel Richmond Houghton. The 2018 vintage in WA was near perfect. A return to average rainfall levels and a bright sunny Spring period in the preceding year has resulted in a high quality average yielding crop. Mild summer conditions prevailed throughout the harvest period enabling steady flavour accumulation and ripeness.
The grapes were crushed, chilled and gently pressed to retain the bright fruit flavours. The juices were then fermented separately in tank at cool temperatures to enhance the varietal characteristics of the wine. The wine was briefly matured on lees to build texture and complexity before final blending prior to packaging.
Intense tropical fruit aromatics of passionfruit, tinned pineapple, lime cordial, crystallised ginger and a hint of musk stick. Full flavoured and citrusy palate, displaying flavours of lemon zest and candied peel, guava, rockmelon, pineapple and green apple. Arguably sets the benchmark for value in Australian Sauvignon Blanc Semillon blends.
