Background Information

Houghton has been proudly producing Western Australian wines for nearly 175 years. It is our exacting attention to flavour profile and overall balance in our wines that sets Houghton apart.
The Small Batch series of wines have been developed as a means of showcasing the creativity of our viticulture and winemaking teams. Each year the teams work closely to trial new varieties, blends and techniques. The Small Batch wines represent their successes.

While winter rainfall in the south west was below average, the driest since 2014, the near average rainfall and above average temperatures that followed in Spring provided the vines with adequate water reserves and sunshine to commence the growing season.
Multiple tropical cyclones (Hilda, Joyce and Kelvin) battered the north of the state throughout Summer; fortunately these weather systems only had a minor impact on the south west and provided the vines with additional water resources at the right times to keep the vines fresh and healthy. The Summer of 2017/18 was particularly mild and meant that the ripening of each of the varieties was gradual resulting in excellent intensity of varietal characters.

Winemaker’s Notes
