The Crofters range celebrates the vision of our founder C.W Ferguson, who made the Houghton ‘Croft’ homestead, the home of Houghton Wines. This range displays finely crafted, contemporary styles, typical of Western Australia’s premium wine regions.
The 2017 vintage was characterised by persistent warm and dry conditions punctuated with several rain events during harvest which produced Cabernet Sauvignon full of fruit flavour and in sound condition.
For this hallmark regional Cabernet Sauvignon, grapes were sourced from premium vineyards in the Frankland River region. The fermentation was carried out using indigenous yeasts and lasted for a period of eight to ten days. The wine was then gently pressed off skins and completed malolactic fermentation on French oak in tank and barrels. Following 16 months maturation, the wine was lightly fined and filtered to bottle.
This wine is a brilliant deep dark red in colour, with a bright scarlet hue. The bouquet displays intense aromatics of cassis, dark chocolate, cigar box, crushed bay leaf and black olive combined with subtle toasty vanillin flavours derived from French oak maturation. A generous, plush mouthfeel supports the bright fruit flavours, with hints of mocha and cassis, and a firm, fine tannin structure with balanced acidity providing lovely texture and length. While drinking well now, the wine will comfortably cellar over the next 10 years.
