The 2017 Houghton Jack Mann is a single vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon from the Justin Vineyard in the heart of the Frankland River region in Western Australia. The Houghton Jack Mann is named in honour of the late, great Jack Mann, who was the Houghton Winemaker from 1922 to 1973. Not only did Jack have a huge influence on the development of the Western Australian wine industry but his commitment to quality and integrity still has an influence on winemakers today.
Jack Mann Cabernet Sauvignon is a single vineyard wine from the Justin Vineyard in the Frankland River region of Western Australia. This region is characterised by cool winters, warm summer days and cool summer nights. The soils at Frankland River are degraded granite gravels that are some of the oldest in the world. The Cabernet grapes for this wine are hand harvested from a small patch of 46 year-old vines. The particular clone of Cabernet Sauvignon is an original Houghton clone selected by Jack Mann.
The 2017 vintage in Frankland River was characterised by persistent warm and dry conditions punctuated by several rain events during harvest. A return to healthy rainfall levels in the preceding winter and a wet, cool spring resulted in healthy vines carrying a good crop. This meant that the ripening and picking times were roughly three weeks later than the short term average. The weather conditions resulted in the harvest of Frankland River Cabernet Sauvignon at full flavour ripeness with fine structured tannins.
The fruit for this wine was hand harvested off the Justin vineyard. Hand sorting the fruit before de-stemming into small open top fermenters ensures the utmost quality. The individual ferments were then undertaken with indigenous yeast‘s, with routine hand plunging, lasting for 10 days before pressing at dryness. The wine was then transferred to French oak barriques oak for malolactic fermentation and then subsequent maturation for 17 months.
This vintage of Jack Mann is 98% Cabernet Sauvignon blended with 2% Malbec.
The wine is purple/ red in colour, with a bright scarlet hue. A dense and concentrated bouquet of dark bramble fruits, blackberry, plum skin, and dark chocolate characters with a subtle overlay of bay leaf, tobacco and wild mint. A full-flavoured, rich and sumptuously layered wine with intensity, power and presence. The dense, firm, fine grained tannin is beautifully integrated with the fruit and oak providing a seamless palate. Outstanding intensity, structure and balance will ensure a long cellaring life.
