Our Story

Founded in 1836, Houghton is part of Western Australia History. Established in the early days of the Swan Valley, it’s colourful history includes tales of pioneer Scots, bandits, and generations of winemaking craftsmanship. Houghton captured the nation’s attention in 1937 when winemaker Jack Mann created Houghton White Burgundy. Still popular today, Houghton White Classic is sold alongside our iconic, award-winning Cabernet Sauvignons.

Three British Army officers (Thomas Yule, Ninian Lowis and Richmond Houghton) established Houghton in 1836, just four years after the fledgling colony of Western Australia was founded. We are named after Lieutenant Colonel Richmond Houghton. Our first commercial vintage, produced by Dr John Ferguson in 1859, was a modest 25 gallons. John Ferguson, a Scottish surgeon, purchased the property that year and was winemaker until 1863.

Houghton is the tenth-largest red and white bottle brand in Australia. Paired alongside our winemaking strength is our incredible selection of vineyards.

We source grapes from every major premium grape-growing region in Western Australia, including the original Swan Valley vineyard in Western Australia's oldest wine region; the Gingin vineyard in the foothills of the state's Darling Ranges; premium grape-growing regions in the South West including Margaret River, Great Southern (ensuring wines with richness and density), the emerging Pemberton area, and Mt Barker located west of the Albany Highway. Houghton has had just 13 winemakers in its rich history and under their custodianship has produced wines with a remarkable consistency of style.

Currently Ross Pamment is leading the charge. Ross re-joined the winemaking team in 1999, a decade after starting here as a cellar hand. He was appointed senior winemaker in 2009, as successor to Rob Bowen, and has decades of winemaking experience behind him.

Ross continues to maintain the definitive, consistent style of Houghton White Classic (formerly Houghton White Burgundy, production of which reached one million bottles in 1972), while also crafting small parcels of fine wines from Margaret River, Pemberton and the Great Southern region. In 2019, Houghton Winery received a 5 red star winery rating in the Halliday Wine Companion 2019, recognising us as an "Outstanding winery which regularly produces wines of exemplary quality and typicity." for the 10th consecutive year.
