The Mann behind the classic!
A wine as popular as Houghton White Classic doesn’t just happen overnight. It quite often starts with a vision. A dream of a single individual to create something extra special. In this case it was the dream of a winemaker named Jack Mann. Jack wanted to create wines ahead of their time. Wines with great flavour and character. In 1937 he achieved that goal with his greatest creation…a wine made from premium Western Australian white grape varieties. The wine was Houghton White Burgundy; now known simply as White Classic. Since that first vintage 70 years ago it has continued its successful journey to today where the distinctive white label with its blue stripe is surely Australia’s most instantly recognisable label.
Over the last 70 vintages literally millions of Australians have enjoyed the results of one man’s genius and as the years go by millions more will join them. So as you fill your commemorative glasses with that familiar refreshing, dry white wine, which was created so long ago, perhaps spare a thought for the Mann behind the Classic. Here’s to you Jack!
Today, in honour of the late Jack Mann, Houghton produces its most outstanding Cabernet Sauvignon, the iconic Jack Mann Cabernet Sauvignon, first crafted in 1994. The leading guide to Australian wine resale values, Langton's Classification V, released in 2010, rated Jack Mann Cabernet Sauvignon as ‘excellent’, recognising it as one of the select Australian wines that continues to appreciate in value at Australian fine wine auctions.
